IMMEDIATELY!!    You will likely be overwhelmed with emergency service people, contractors and public-adjusters pressuring you to sign contracts, authorizations and do all sorts of things.  STOP!   Those need to be read and you need to understand that nothing is free.  You are often committing to services that aren't right for you by people you don't know.

What do I do after a fire loss?

We will always say, CALL US AT 630 XXX XXXX day or night.  You are going to get swamped with people and questions immediately and you will need guidance.  OUR EMERGENCY ADVICE IS ALWAYS FREE.  These complimentary services are because we believe in our mission and the difference it will make in your life.  We can provide our services in Spanish and Polish.

That being said....

RULE 1
Time is important but PROPERTY IS SECONDARY TO YOUR HEALTH AND SAFETY.  Ensure your safety, seek medical treatment.  Rest so you can make decisions with a clear mind.  NEVER sign any contract or agreement on-site.  If you still see smoke, it's definitely too early.

Contact your insurance carrier to they can begin their process.  They very often have an emergency process in place for you.   Ask them to send you a copy of your policy by e-mail.  The policy is your roadmap for everything.
Organize alternate shelter.  Don't sign contracts.

If nobody was seriously hurt -

Be careful at the property.  After the fire is out, the property can be physically unstable and dangerous.  Plastic fumes are toxic and dangerous.    Professionals can help recover your personal property.  Remember Rule 1.
Secure the property so nobody gets hurt.   This will be done by professional board-up companies.  Make sure they are licensed and qualified.  You should review the contract first or have us provide recommendations.

Now, you're ready for the claim!

If somebody was injured or killed, various inspectors will want to investigate.    You may not to do anything at the property until the scene is cleared or it may not be wise to do so.  Contact us for guidance.

Do I need to hire a public adjuster right away?

We recommend that you have us evaluate the claim first.  Adjusters are useful and we do recommend them for many losses.  Like any professional, you want to make sure you select a qualified adjuster and if needed, our recommendations can help ease your claim.

How much does an attorney cost for a fire claim?

Accepted Answer

Very rarely will you be out of pocket with our office.  You insurer will pay for damages and part of those payments are for "overhead" of the claim.  We strive to stay cost-effective so our fees are honored as part of the claim.
